Government has commended the tea sector for its contribution to the country’s economy, especially when it comes to foreign exchange earnings and empowering women.
Minister of Gender, Jean Sendeza made the remarks in Salima at this year’s Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) – Partners Engagement Conference.
Sendeza applauded TAML for complementing the government’s effort to address systematic and structural barriers that have resulted in limited investments in the development of women and girls.
“The industry must modernise and streamline the Malawi 2063 agenda to meet the demands of women and girls, on the ground,” said Sendeza.
TAML Chairperson Sangwani Hara, said all member tea estates have fulfilled the requirements of the gender and child labour policies.
The tea industry is the second largest foreign exchange earner after tobacco.
