Floods displace communities in Karonga

Some communities under Traditional Authority Kyungu’s area in Karonga District have been rendered homeless following the flooding of Rukuru River on the night of 23 February 2024.

Chairperson for Mbande Civil Protection Committee, Advocate Mbale, said the affected villages are Zindi, Mwandwanga, Mweniyumba, Kalambo and Mweninguwe.

Currently, the displaced people are being housed at Masoko Church, Silu CBCC, Zindi Church, Chinsewe Church and other places along the M1 road.

The district council team is currently waiting for flood water, which has made the M1 road impassable, to recede.

No death has so far been reported but tens of hectares of crops such as maize and rice as well as livestock have been washed away.
