Eligible citizens urged to register for a National ID card

Malawi Electoral Commision (MEC)’s District Elections Officer for Karonga, Elias Nyirenda, has urged eligible citizens to turn up in large numbers for the National Identity mop up registration and distribution of cards exercise currently underway.

Speaking to the Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Wednesday, Nyirenda said during MEC’s engagement with Multiparty Liason Committees in all districts, political party representatives complained that most potential voters do not have National ID’s.

“…the new electoral laws stipulate that only those with proof of registration from NRB will be registered to vote in the 2025 general election so potential voters should utilise this opportunity to get a National ID,”said Nyirenda.

He has since called on chiefs, religious leaders and others to help raise awareness on the mop up exercise, which he said is being conducted by the National Registration Bureau in MEC’s registration centres.
