Dedza Secondary School crowned champions of 2024 National Science Quiz

Dedza Secondary School has emerged victorious in this year’s MacFarlane Mbewe National Science Quiz, organised by the Science for All Initiative under the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW).

Six schools, each representing one education division, participated in the competition held in Lilongwe.

Dedza Secondary School triumphed with 52 points, narrowly defeating Providence Secondary School, which scored 50 points.

The winners received K2.5 million, while Providence received K1.5 million. Loyola Jesuit secured third place with 40 points, followed by NkhataBay Secondary School with 38 points. St Mary’s and BSS tied for fifth place, both scoring 34 points.

MLW has also offered paid internships to three of the best-performing Form 4 students in the competition. Additionally, the three best students were awarded laptops sponsored by Celestial Electronics.

Director of the Science for All Initiative, Kondwani Jambo, said that the initiative aims to inspire students to pursue science careers, with plans to establish Science for All clubs in secondary schools across Malawi.

This year’s quiz introduced a digital questioning system to enhance clarity for participants and the audience, showcasing the competition’s commitment to integrity and modernisation.
