Some customers in Lilongwe have commended President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s administration for facilitating a reduction in cement prices to between K25,000 and K26,000 following the government’s intervention to import the commodity from Zambia.
The development comes after prices had soared to as high as K50,000 in some areas, rendering cement unaffordable for many.
Shop Manager at Randera in Lilongwe, Abdul Chunara, confirmed that the first consignment of cement from Zambia has arrived and is selling at K25,000 per bag.
Chunara praised the government’s efforts to make foreign exchange available for importation, saying this would ensure a steady supply of the essential construction material.
One of the buyers, Diani Mpagaja, also expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the reduced prices will allow many to resume stalled house construction projects.
