The cost of building a house in Blantyre and Mzuzu cities is higher than the average cost, according to a recent study by the Centre for Social Concern (CFSC) in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity.
The study has unveiled that the cost of constructing a house in Mzuzu stands at K15.2 million while in Blantyre, it is as high as K14.1 million, surpassing the average price in the country which is K10 million.
Kondwani Hara, the Project Officer for CFSC, said their research findings indicated an average expenditure of around K12,565,300, signifying a notable deviation from the expected costs.
Hara said with the current statistics, it can take the lowest civil servant at least 23 years to build such a house if he or she is to save 30% of their monthly salary.
The study was carried out in districts such as Karonga, Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Zomba, Mangochi and Blantyre.
