Chitipa farmers urged to adopt liquid organic fertiliser

By Joseph Mbughi, Chitipa

Farmers in Chitipa District have been urged to transition to liquid organic fertiliser, a move experts say will provide a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to traditional inputs.

The remarks were made during a meeting with the District Agriculture Extension Coordinating Committee (DAECC) organised by Glowbest in Chitipa.

He noted that beyond its affordability, the organic solution is designed to “restore life to the soil,” reversing degradation and enhancing long-term fertility.

Unlike granular fertilisers, this liquid alternative is applied as a foliar spray directly onto the leaves. Chilungo explained that the product is versatile enough to be used throughout the crop cycle from germination through to the basal and top-dressing stages.

“This fertiliser is 100% effective and is derived from fish-based organic matter,” Chilungo stated. “Once applied, it optimises crop development, ultimately enabling farmers to achieve a bumper yield.”

In his remarks, Acting Chief Agriculture Officer, Lameck Chirwa, commended Glowbest for introducing the technology to the district as he highlighted that the lower price point is a significant advantage, ensuring that smallholder farmers who often struggle with the rising costs of chemical fertilisers can afford the necessary inputs.

“We are going to establish demonstration fields in all six Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) to ensure successful adoption, and this will provide farmers with hands-on knowledge and a clear understanding of how the liquid fertiliser works in real-world conditions.
