‘Chitipa contributes to Karonga disasters’

Chitipa District Council has revealed that the district has been complicit in disasters that have occurred in Karonga District, especially floods, due to human activities along river banks.

The district’s Director of Planning and Development, Jossen Tembo, observed most people cultivate along the river banks in Chitipa District, which results in running water downstream up to Karonga, leading to floods.

Tembo made the remarks on Monday during a learning visit by the Karonga District Disaster Risk Management Committee (DRMC) under the Karonga District Council as part of enhancing collaboration between the two districts.

Karonga District Risk Disaster Management Officer, Humphrey Magalasi, said the objective of the visit was to learn and share experiences on risk management.
