President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) Malawi Square for the launch of the Agriculture Mechanisation Initiative, an arrangement through which farmers will be able to obtain farm machinery on loan.
The initiative is sponsored by Phillip Morris International and Pyxus Agriculture.
During the launch, 23 tractors will be supplied to various farmers and cooperatives.
Pedro Braga, Vice President for Global Technical Operations at Phillip Morris International said the initiative is one way of overcoming barriers to mechanisation being faced by smallholder farmers a factor which limits their productive potential.
In his State of the Nation Address, Dr Chakwera hinted on intensifying agriculture mechanisation for higher production.
