Utilise irrigation to contain drought-induced hunger – Agriculturalist

In the face of hunger that has affected some parts of the country, Agriculturists have tipped farmers in Dedza North–West to adopt irrigation farming.

This, they believe, can come in handy bearing in mind that the country’s rainfall pattern remains intermittent.

A total of 486 households were reportedly staring hunger in the face at Chilikumwendo locality following a dry spell.

Stafiel Mkumbula, Development Coordinator for Chafumbwa Agriculture Extension — where farmers have been lamenting about draught, acknowledged that irrigation would be a great tool with which to supplement their harvest.

One of the farmers, Macson Lefani of Chimphangu village, believes the dry spell in the area is due to wanton cutting down of trees.

A few days ago, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services announced that there would be thunderstorms and heavy rains in some parts of the country.
