Police have arrested 42-year-old Imran Mapira for various theft offences committed in Malawi’s Mchinji District and Chipata in Zambia, in the process recovering stolen items, including three firearms.
According to National Police deputy publicist, Alfred Chimthere, Mapira was intercepted by Police officers manning Chidiso Roadblock on June 2, 2024, along M12 Mchinji Border road in the area of Traditional Authority Ndawambe in Mchinji.
Chimthere said upon searching the suspect’s luggage, Police recovered assorted mobile smartphones believed to have been stolen from Chipata.
The Police Detectives immediately linked with their Zambian counterparts, who identified the suspect along with other two accomplices currently on the run.
Police have since seized a Taurus pistol with eleven rounds, one shotgun, one pellet gun, eight shell bullets, and a Panga knife. The weapons were hidden in a maize field in Chipata, Zambia.
Mapira hails from Moses Village, Traditional Authority Chamba in Machinga District.
