Brazio Chinthenga has been elected as the new chairperson for Zomba District Council, replacing Baster Chirwa.
The council has also elected Everlister Kalimbuka as the vice-chairperson.
Chinthenga has won the seat for the second time after getting 10 votes, beating three other contestants: Macfesteno Sulumba who came second with 6 votes, Michael Khwilipa got 4 votes while Gift Chilima had 3 votes.
Kalimbuka won decisively with 17 votes, defeating Fillip Mapila who received 6 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Chithenga stressed the importance of unity, oneness and cooperation among council members.
The new chairperson also emphasised the need to address issues amicably and urged members to deliver on their responsibilities.
Chithenga pledged to complete ongoing projects, building on the work of his predecessors.
The newly elected vice-chairperson expressed her gratitude to those who supported her.
She highlighted the importance of gender balance in leadership and vowed to collaborate closely with the chairperson to meet the expectations of those who elected them.
District Commissioner for Zomba, Reighgard Chavula congratulated the new leaders, expressing confidence in their ability to carry out their duties effectively.
