Temwa Chawinga, striker for the Scorchers and Kansas City Current, has been crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), becoming the first African player to achieve this honour.
She has beaten four other nominees including Zambian Babra Banda to clinch the award.
Temwa shattered the scoring records in the NWSL after becoming the first player to score 20 goals in a single season. She was also the first to score in 8 consecutive matches and the first player to score against all 13 active teams in a single season.
Moreover, Chawinga was the first player to reach 26 goal contributions in one season.
The prolific striker is the first player for the club to win both the Golden Boot and MVP awards
Adding to her accolades, she has been nominated for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award alongside her older sister, Tabitha.
