Students in public universities hail government for supporting needy students

Malawi Public Universities Union has commended government for bailing them out financially through the Presidential Charity Golf Initiative and provision of loans.

Addressing journalists in Blantyre, President for the Malawi Public Universities Union, Gershom Nyirenda, said it is pleasing to note that 95.5 percent of students who applied for loans were approved and the student upkeep allowance has been revised twice, from K200,000 to the current K560,000.

Nyirenda further explained that students have been struggling to make ends meet and at the same time concentrate on their studies a development he termed counterproductive.

Vice President for Unima Student Representative Council Lilian Chawinga applauded government for considering students in private institutions with loans.

“Government understands that not everyone can be enrolled into public universities hence the need to support needy students in private institutions,” Said Chawinga.

Government has allocated K31 billion in the 2024/2025 budget to support 29,813 students through the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board and the Presidential Charity Golf tournament.

Apart from the loans over 500 students are expected to benefit through Presidential Charity Golf Initiative.
