Minister of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, has said the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) will see 361,642 new beneficiaries being registered.
The Minister said this on Thursday in Mangochi when opening a two-day SCTP technical review meeting which has brought together donors of the programme and officials from all 28 districts in Malawi.
“The new beneficiaries will be those from child headed families, the chronically ill, disabled and the eldery. The categorical targeting will be used inorder to create an inclusive and equitable society by ensuring that vulnerable groups are included as opposed to the previous system which enrolled poor and labour constrained beneficiaries,” Sendeza said.
Speaking on behalf of all District Commissioners (DC), Machinga DC Rodrick Mateauma described the SCTP as a noble intervention which is uplifting the lives of so many Malawians.
“Malawians are being hit by so many shocks and the SCTP is helping address many challenges in communities. Local authorities have an important role to play in ensuring that the programme is implemented properly for it to achieve its objective,”Mateauma said.
In the 2023/24 financial year, over K39 billion was distributed to 323,000 households which are beneficiaries of SCTP in Malawi.
