SADC to launch humanitarian appeal

Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is set to launch a humanitarian appeal during its forthcoming Virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and government, which is slated for 20 May 2024.

According to a statement signed by SADC chairperson and president of Angola, João Lourenco, the humanitarian appeal will, among other issues, highlight the population affected by El Nino-induced drought, their prioritised needs and a call for immediate support from regional and international partners to address the needs of the affected population.

The statement further says the summit will also discuss measures to mitigate the impact of El Nino-induced drought that has negatively affected the livelihoods of 58 million people in the region.

Malawi is among the countries in the SADC region facing food insecurity this year as a result of poor rains caused by El Nino weather conditions.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera declared a State of Disaster in 23 of the country’s 28 districts in March this year.
