Rumphi District Council on Wednesday launched a K91 million youth resource centre, funded through the World Bank-supported Governance to Enable Service Delivery project, which contributed K62 million, and the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which provided K29 million.
Speaking during the ceremony Member of Parliament for Rumphi Central, Chidumba Mkandawire said the centre will give the youth in the district a safe place where they will acquire vocational and other life skills to live responsible lives.
Mkandawire also made several donations to the centre, including sewing machines, a desktop computer, and a plasma television. He allocated K20 million in loans to various youth groups through CDF.
Rumphi District Commissioner, Emmanuel Bulukutu, urged the youth to utilise the centre’s services such as a library and also vocational skills that will be offered to improve their livelihoods.
Maxon Ngulube, a youth representative, said the centre will offer self-employment by offering vocational skills training, such as tailoring which will help to reduce suicide rates and promote mental well-being.
