RCRP-2 to bolster Malawi’s infrastructure against climate shocks

Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has expressed optimism that the $90 million (approx. K155 billion) Regional Climate Resilience Programme 2 (RCRP-2) will help councils have proper infrastructures that are able to withstand effects of climate change.

Chimwendo Banda made the remarks in Salima during an engagement with parliamentarians on the progress of the Governance to Enable Service Delivery and the expectations of RCRP-2.

He also expressed hope that people will benefit from the project after noting that people living in rural areas are mostly affected by climate-related shocks and stressed the importance of parliamentarians and technocrats to ensure transparency and accountability of resources.

“Members of Parliament, their role is appraising and approving projects. Procurement and execution of the projects must be left to technical people.” He said.

RCRP-2’s Deputy Coordinator, Flemmings Nyirenda, responded by saying all resources will be used through Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFIMIS) to ensure sufficient utilisation of resources in the country.

Government is implementing RCRP-2 with funding from the World Bank. The programme will run from 2024 to 2029 and is expected to benefit over 15 million people in Malawi.
