Education rights campaigner, Limbani Nsapato, has called on the private sector to contribute more towards education as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to help eradicate child labour.
Nsapato, who is the Country Director for Edukans, made the call on Wednesday during a breakfast meeting organised by the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) in Blantyre.
“The private sector can play a pivotal role in providing resources, opportunities, and support to keep children in school and break the cycle of child labour,” he said.
ECAM Executive Director, George Khaki, pointed out that tough times are pushing some children into the workforce.
“Child labour has deepened due to the economic hardships that Malawians are experiencing, although there have been some positive strides in eliminating child labour,” Khaki said.
Khaki called for consolidated efforts to tackle the issue and urged the private sector to support educational institutions by providing scholarships as part of their CSR efforts.
