In an address following his inauguration for a second five-year term, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) implored African leaders to champion peace and democratic values on the continent for the collective welfare of their citizens.
The inauguration ceremony, marked by President Tshisekedi’s victory in the December 2023 Presidential elections, took place at the Matyrs National Stadium in Kinshasa, drawing an immense crowd.
President Tshisekedi, emphasizing the imperative for unity among African leaders, pledged to collaborate with any willing party to advance the development of the DRC and foster regional integration.
Grateful for the presence of fellow heads of state and governments, he highlighted the camaraderie shared among African leaders.
Additionally, President Tshisekedi expressed gratitude towards the United Nations and various organizations for their crucial role in upholding peace and stability in the DRC.
Among the dignitaries attending the swearing-in ceremony was State President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
President Dr. Chakwera’s visit to the DRC, focused on security discussions, aligns with the ongoing peacekeeping efforts in Eastern Congo, where Malawian troops operate under the United Nations mandate.
The DRC government generously sponsored President Chakwera’s visit, covering expenses such as chartering an aircraft and accommodation.
Notably, the Malawi Defence Force has been actively engaged in peacekeeping missions in the DRC and extending its commitment to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional block in recent deployments.
