POOR PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH WORRIES AUTHORITIES

Educationists in the North Education Division have expressed concern over the declining performance of students in English subjects in secondary schools.

Education Division Manager (North) Jennings Kayira, was speaking when he opened two-day capacity-building workshops for English teachers in the division organised by the Association for the Teaching of English in Malawi (ATEM) in conjunction with Anti Corruption Bureau and Vanguard Assurance Company.

During the 2022/2023 MSCE examination results students did not perform well with only 40 distinctions from the whole division,” said Kayira.

He said students are failing in many areas like composition, comprehension, grammar as well as reading.

Kayira therefore, hailed the Association for the Teaching of English in Malawi (ATEM) for the various interventions aimed at improving teaching of English in secondary schools.

The workshops which ended on Friday took place simultaneously in Mzuzu, Mzimba South and Karonga with teachers coming from all the districts in the division.
