The recent meeting of parliamentarians in Accra, Ghana, to discuss the Post-Malabo processes ended with a call for all legislators to use their influence to effect change in Africa’s agriculture development through the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP).
The CAADP is an Agenda 2063 continental initiative that aims to help African countries eliminate hunger and reduce poverty by raising economic growth through agriculture-led development.
Members of Parliament discussed what has worked and what hasn’t and the need to increase awareness of what CAADP is all about.
The meeting also discussed the involvement of media, especially public media, in the development agenda of the continent.
Gladys Ganda, Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje Constituency in Malawi, has been elected Vice Secretary General of the continental parliamentarians’ body, the African Food System Parliamentary Network (AFSPaN).
AFSPaN unites Members of Parliament (MPs) from diverse African nations, forming a powerful alliance dedicated to advancing food system improvements and bolstering food security across the continent.
The rest of the election results are as follows:
– Chairperson: Godfrey Jasaw – Ghana
– Vice-Chairperson: Neema Lugangira – Tanzania
– Secretary General: Jeremy Lissouba – DRC
– Vice Secretary General: Gladys Ganda – Malawi
Another highlight on the sidelines of the AFSPaN meeting was the election of a Malawian to the Non-State Actors Group, also known as CNG.
This is a group that comprises five constituencies: Smallholder Farmers, Civil Society Organisations, International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs), Youth, and Media.
Chikondi Chabvuta from Malawi, representing CARE on the International Non-Governmental Organisations, was elected Chairperson of CNG for the next two years.
