Parliament impressed with mobile money fraud decrease

Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information, and Communication has lauded Malawi Prison Services and mobile telecommunications service providers for their vigilance that has led to a notable decrease in mobile money fraud.

As of March 2024, Airtel’s mobile money fraud decreased by 53% from K28 million to K13 million while TNM Mpamba managed a 15% reduction from K2.7 million to K 2.3 million.

However, members of the committee expressed concern over the persistence of the problem, questioning why in 2024 fraudsters are still stealing from their clients.

Charles Kamoto, Airtel Malawi Managing Director, was however optimistic that through the joint taskforce put together in November 2021, they will soon get rid of the mobile money fraudsters.

While acknowledging that most of these fradulent activities are largely done by inmates, spokesperson for Malawi Prison Services, Chimwemwe Shaba, attributed that they have intensified security measures at all checkpoints, particularly at Zomba Maximum Prison.

Also present at the meeting were representatives of MACRA, Reserve Bank of Malawi and other stakeholders.
