Over 10,000 households in Nkhata Bay to get food aid

Nkhata Bay District Council is set to distribute relief food items to 10,494 households starting Friday, under the 2024/25 National Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.

District Commissioner Rodgers Newa announced this during a full council meeting on Wednesday, where he updated council members on ongoing initiatives in the district.

“We are done with assessment, retargeting and verification of beneficiaries. The maize distribution starts with the area of lower Zilakoma and then all other areas across the district,” he said.

According to Newa, each household is expected to receive the support of a 50-kilogram bag of maize for December, January and February.

Traditional Authority Zilakoma commended government for the timely support, noting this will bail out households that are currently affected by hunger in his area.

Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report established that about 5.7 million Malawians will be in dire need of food aid during the lean period from October 2024.
