Having noted that during disasters, some people with hearing disability end up being left out from timely alerts due to a lack of proper communication, an organization called Tamva Friends for the Deaf is training its staff and board members on inclusive Disaster Risk and Management.
The training is taking place in Blantyre, which is also the organization’s catchment area.
Tamva Friends for the Deaf Executive Director, Zenas Govati pointed out that well-informed leaders are crucial in serving others in times of natural disasters.
“One of the main challenges deaf people face during disasters is to access information,” said Govati
Speaking through a sign language interpreter, one of the participants, Jimmy Akimu, described the training as timely as now natural disasters are widespread.
