As one way of promoting awareness of the prevention and management of cancer and fistula among women, a local NGO called Support for Community and Health Initiatives (SUCHI) has organised a Mother’s Day train ride from Blantyre to Balaka.
Chief Executive Officer for SUCHI, Geoffrey Tamutamu, told MBC Digital that during the ride, the women will also undergo training in business financing, investment and entrepreneurship skills.
According to Tamutamu, the event will conclude with a visit to Balaka Hospital and a free music performance at Balaka Stadium, where women will be educated on preventing and managing fistula and cancer.
UNFPA data shows that about 20,000 women and girls in Malawi are living with Fistula.
According to the Ministry of Health, breast, lung and colorectal cancers account for 51% of all new cancer cases in women this year alone.
