President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has hailed the Republic of India for its ongoing support to Malawi.
Dr. Chakwera made these remarks at Kamuzu Palace during bilateral talks with the President of India, Shrimati Droupadi Murmu.
The Malawi leader noted that Malawi has gained from various capacity-building initiatives, support in health sector and humanitarian assistance during emergencies, all of which have improved people’s lives and reduced suffering.
With regards to trade, Dr. Chakwera urged the Indian government to review the duty on macadamia and other commodities from Malawi to enable local businesses maximize benefits from the Indian market.
President Murmu has meanwhile pledged continued support to Malawi andassured that the pigeon pea market remains open to Malawi and that the country should supply any volume of the commodity.
Malawi and India have signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering youth and sports, cultural exchanges and the pharmaceutical sector. The government of India also presented Malawi with 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to aid communities in 23 districts affected by drought.
