Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is set to upgrade its Blantyre in-land examination centre to improve capacity and efficiency.
The upgrade will bring scanners, and have space for the Malawi Bureau of Standards to certify goods right at the centre among other additions.
The upgrade effort is funded by the World Bank through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project.
The inland examination center is where the MRA receives all trucks bringing various commodities into the country for inspection.
Here, the goods are examined to determine acceptability and to decide on applicable taxes and levies.
The tax collecting body’s Deputy Commissioner General, Moses Masina, says, at the moment, examination of incoming goods is done manually which is slow and leads to congestion of trucks at the centre.
The project is housed in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works and seeks to ease the conduct of trade between Malawi and its regional partners.
