Pressure is mounting on the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Board to appoint a new Commissioner General following the expiry of the contract for the authority’s former Commissioner General, John Biziwick.
Biziwick left office a week ago, which means MRA is currently operating without a Commissioner General.
Good governance and economic experts, such as the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT) and the Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), have indicated that the board should quickly appoint a Commissioner General, considering the critical role MRA plays in the economy.
CSAT Executive Director, Willy Kambwandira, and ECAMA President, Bertha Chikadza, have stated that, while it is important to allow the board time for a thorough and well-considered process, there is a need to hasten the appointment.
MRA Board Chairperson, Vizenge Kumwenda, was not immediately available for comment.
