The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) says coordination between government, district councils and traditional leaders is crucial in the promotion of refugee and asylum seekers’ rights in Malawi.
MHRC Commissioner, Andrew Kavala made the remarks in Blantyre on Friday during a Regional Engagement on Rights of Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
“Poor coordination is the biggest challenge in the implementation of instruments that promote the refugee rights and their protection. Malawians need to work as a team on refugee issues and their dignity,” said Kavala.
He disclosed that in February this year, the MHRC rolled out a project funded by the European Union that aims to strengthen the coordination of pillars that promote the rule of law on the rights and dignity of refugees and asylum seekers.
Kavala commended government for its efforts in ensuring that the country observes laws and protocols put in place to serve refugees.
