Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) says it has facilitated 6,514 cataract surgeries for eye patients in marginalized communities across all Central Region districts and Nkhata Bay through the UK Aid Match Project, which has been running for the past three years.
Speaking at a celebration marking the project’s success, MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala added that the project has trained 1,775 clinicians with eye expertise.
Kavala urged the government to continue the initiative by utilizing the trained staff following the project’s conclusion.
One beneficiary, Daniel Mpeyama, shared his gratitude for the project, pointing out that he received his sight through the project.
National Eye Care Coordinator in the Ministry of Health, Michael Masika, applauded MANEPO for what he described as a successful adventure.
