Man drowns while stealing fish in Lake Malombe

30-year-old Issa Kamwendo has drowned in Lake Malombe, Mangochi after allegedly being caught stealing fish from other fishermen’s traps.

According to Mangochi Police Station spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi, Kamwendo went to the lake around midnight on Monday, using his father’s boat, to steal fish from other fishermen’s traps.  He then jumped into the water after being sighted by the trap owners.

The trap owners reported the incident to the deceased’s father.

Kamwendo did not return home that night, which prompted his father and other relatives to start searching for him the following day. His body was later found floating near Likala Fishing Dock on the evening of February 27, 2024.

Kamwendo hailed from Namasiyano Village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
