Police in Mchinji District have arrested 31-year-old James Phiri for personating a National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) officer and duping a victim K131,000 in the district.
Mchinji Police Station publicist, Limbani Mpinganjira, has told MBC that Phiri (the imposter), met the victim at NEEF offices in Mchinji and claimed to be a NEEF employee and promised to help the victim process his loan in time, demanding K275,000 from the victim for a K5,000,000 loan the victim was applying for.
The victim got duped K131,000 in the process and upon noting the delays, the victim was prompted to probe more and discovered that Phiri was just an imposter.
The suspect is currently in Police custody and is expected to appear before a court to answer the charge of Personating Public Officer.
Phiri hails from Chilowa Village, Traditional Authority Mnjombwa in Kasungu.
