Malawians urged to harness potato’s potential for economic growth

Board Chairperson of the Root and Tuber Crops Development Trust, Jeane Pankuku, has urged Malawians to adopt potatoes as a cash crop since it has the potential to generate foreign currency.

Pankuku was speaking at the commemorations of World Potato Day earlier in the week in Lilongwe.

One of the potato farmers, Matiness Gangata, who is a member of Changoni Cooperative in Dedza District, concurred, adding that the crop is a sure way to maintain food security in Malawi.

World Potato Day was declared by the United Nations in December last year, to fall on May 30 every year and it was under the theme: “Harvesting diversity, feeding hope”.
