The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has commended Malawi for its efforts in combating the recently ended cholera pandemic, forecasting the complete eradication of the disease by 2030.
Speaking in Salima at the National Cholera Response Plan Multistakeholder Workshop — organised by the Malawi Red Cross Society, Dr. Joseph Adive Seriki, Regional CSP Coordinator for IFRC, praised Malawi’s achievements.
He noted that compared to other African nations, Malawi has performed exceptionally well and is on track to eradicate cholera if current initiatives continue.
Wilfred Nkhoma, Co-Chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on Coronavirus and Cholera, highlighted that Malawi has not registered a single cholera case since March 2024, marking a thorough eradication rate of the pandemic.
He expressed confidence that cholera will be a thing of the past as vision of reducing cholera cases to 1% by the year 2030 is in sight.
However, Nkhoma emphasised the need for continued efforts in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices to prevent any setbacks in the fight.
