ART CAN PROMOTE MALAWI’S IMAGE AND ECONOMIC FORTUNES — CHOMANIKA

Deputy Minister of Local Government Unity and Culture, Owen Chomanika, says the arts industry remains crucial to the promotion of the country’s image.

He was speaking in Lilongwe when the UNESCO made a commitment to support Malawi’s Department of Arts with technical assistance for the establishment of the National Arts and Heritage Fund.

Chomanika is optimistic that the arts sector can equally help when it comes to revenue generation for both artists and the country.

UNESCO will bring on board two experts plus 30,000 United States dollars to help the department formulate regulations guiding the operations of National Heritage Arts Council; the custodian of the Arts Fund.

Once rolled out, the Arts and Heritage Promotion Fund will support artists in implementing arts-related projects.
