Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda has expressed optimism that the country will combat HIV/AIDS by 2030.
Chiponda made these remarks in Lilongwe during a high-level panel meeting on the global management and review of HIV/AIDS.
She said the country has made strides in reducing new infections by 79% and AIDS-related deaths by 70%.
Chiponda emphasized that the Ministry has implemented strategies to ensure HIV/AIDS is no longer a public health threat.
Executive Director of the United Nations Joint Program on HIV/AIDS, Winnie Byanyima, commended Malawi’s efforts in fighting HIV/AIDS despite financial challenges and climate shocks.
Byanyima stressed the need for increased efforts to address new infections, particularly among young people.
Project Officer for the National Association for Young People Living with HIV, Ishmael Phiri advocated for domestic financing in health systems to sustain progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
