Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, has expressed Malawi’s appreciation for the United Nations’ (UN) support during the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which affected many people.
Kunkuyu made the remarks in the USA following President Chakwera’s meeting with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
He noted that the President’s meeting with the Secretary-General was to acknowledge the UN’s assistance in times of disaster, as well as its support for social protection programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer Programme.
Kunkuyu highlighted that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) offers a rare opportunity for President Chakwera to engage in discussions with the Secretary-General, donors and potential investors.
He added that Dr Chakwera also stressed to the Secretary-General that Malawians impacted by the drought still require food aid, as the country faces numerous climate change-related challenges.
Kunkuyu further noted that President Chakwera’s participation in UNGA and other global summits consistently benefits the people of Malawi, citing efforts to end power blackouts in the country as an example.
