The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, in partnership with the Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA), has announced preparations for the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), celebrated annually on 3 December.
Malawi will join other countries in commemorating the day, with specific event details to be announced soon.
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” emphasises the growing influence of persons with disabilities in shaping policies and advancing the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
“The theme underscores key leadership roles persons with disabilities are playing at global, regional, and national levels,” the Ministry of Gender is quoted in a statement.
“It is a call to action for all sectors to support their contributions towards an inclusive and sustainable future,” reads the statement in part.
IDPD, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, aims to raise awareness of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
