The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (MANEPO) says the passing of the Older Persons’ Bill by Parliament today is a significant step.
MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala says in a statement that this reaffirms the intrinsic worth of older persons within Malawi’s society and sets a precedent for inclusive governance.
“As we celebrate the passing of the Older Persons Bill, we urge every Malawian to unite in protecting, promoting and safeguarding the rights of older persons to live a dignified, secure, active and healthy life,” said Kavala.
MANEPO however stresses that eradicating entrenched myths and stereotypes demands concerted efforts across all sectors.
The bill, among others, encompasses provisions for financial aid, offering monthly grants to older individuals across the country and the establishment of a National Steering Committee on Older Persons.
