Arts and heritage industry urged to embrace competitiveness

Deputy Minister of Unity and Culture, Owen Chomanika, has urged key players in the arts and heritage industry to be innovative and competitive, pointing out that this is the only way the new National Arts and Heritage Act can be effective.

Chomanika made the remarks during the National Conference on the Arts and Heritage Industries in Lilongwe, which aims to familiarise participants with the provisions of the new law, relevant policies, and research insights.

The Deputy Minister emphasised the need for creativity and quality in local products to enable them to compete on the international market. He noted that achieving this would help the arts and heritage sector grow into a robust and significant contributor to the economy.

Deputy Executive Secretary for UNESCO, David Mulera, said they expect that the outcomes of the conference will bring about the needed transformation in the industries by making the new act implementable.

Mulera is optimistic that through the conference, weak areas in the industry  will be strengthened.
