Mabedi drops Gaba as Silver Strikers dominate Flames squad

Patrick Mabedi, coach of the Malawi National Football Team, has released his final squad for the matches against São Tomé and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea.

Malawi will host Sao Tome at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Thursday, 6 June and will face Equatorial Guinea on Monday, June 10.

The 26-man squad includes six foreign-based players such as Henry Mwayi Kumwenda (USA), Brighton Munthali (South Africa), and Denis Chembezi (Iraq). Notably, Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango has been dropped from the team.

Silver Strikers dominate the squad with nine players, including goalkeeper George Chikooka, four defenders and midfielders. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets has contributed five players, while Mighty Mukuru Wanderers has four players selected.

The team will regroup in Lilongwe and have their first full training session tomorrow afternoon.

Malawi is in Group H of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, currently fourth with three points from two games.

Tunisia leads the group with six points, followed by Namibia and Liberia. São Tomé and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea are yet to earn points.

Earlier, Equatorial Guinea forfeited their first two matches of the group for fielding an ineligible player.
