Illovo Sugar Malawi has launched an initiative worth K100 million that aims at addressing challenges girls face to access education due to menstrual issues called Rise for Girls.
Speaking on Saturday at Ngabu Secondary School in Chikwawa during the launch of the initiative, the Programme Ambassador, Ricky Pillay, who is also the General Manager of Nchalo Sugar Estate, said the project will ensure that girls have the necessary resources to stay in school, while also promoting gender equity in education between boys and girls.
The company also donated 1000 menstrual care packs, a water bucket, soap and sanitary pads.
One of the beneficiaries, Esther Erick, who is also head girl at Ngabu Secondary School said she will utilise the initiative to maximise her uninterrupted attendance at school.
The program which targets 1000 girls in Chikwawa, will be implemented in 4 schools in the district namely Ngabu and Dzumira Secondary Schools as well as Jombo and Nchalo Community Day Secondary Schools.
