Ministry of Education, in partnership with the UK government, have launched a National Mathematics Curriculum Reform Programme to address an 87% numeracy gap that exists among 10-year-olds in the country.
British High Commissioner, Fiona Ritchie, confirmed this during the launch at Yaye Primary School in Lilongwe.
Ritchie highlighted that only 13% of 10-year-olds in Malawi are numerate, a static deemed unacceptable for a nation striving towards its 2063 goals.
Secretary for Education in the Ministry of Education, Mangani Chilala Katundu, said the reform aims to teach children how Mathematics works in their everyday life rather than them just memorising.
Over 3.8 million learners are expected to benefit and so far, over 12,000 teachers have been trained in the reformed Curriculum and are ready to use it in all schools throughout the country.
