Ministry of Labour, with support from the European Union’s Zantchito project, has initiated a comprehensive review of Malawi’s labour laws to ensure alignment with regional and global conventions.
The review aims to strengthen labour laws, promoting decent jobs and sustainable economic development.
Rodgers Matsikidze, EU Labour Laws consultant, emphasised the need to improve efficiencies in existing acts. “We need to align Malawi’s laws with International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions for impactful results,” he explained.
Key areas of focus include enhancing dispute resolution mechanisms for employees and employers, eliminating hazardous practices for children, and attracting investors through a robust labour framework
Chikondano Musa, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, expressed confidence that the review will be completed by December next year, addressing challenges arising from gaps in current legislation.
According to Musa, the labour laws review is a crucial step towards promoting decent work, protecting workers’ rights, and driving sustainable economic growth in the country.
