Capital Hill is set to equip cooperatives in the country with relevant knowledge to grow their businesses that can also help them secure matching grants from the Southern Africa Trade Connectivity.
To this effect, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has launched the cooperative leadership training aimed at improving their capacity, in terms of governance and productivity.
The five-day training, which is being facilitated by the Southern Africa Trade Connectivity Project, is taking place in 15 districts across the country.
Speaking at Chileka Horticulture Cooperative in Blantyre, Principal Secretary for SMEs and Cooperatives in the Ministry, Francis Zhuwao, said the training will bring about a positive change.
“If the cooperatives advance their businesses, large firms can access matching grants of over K200 million, while small-scale cooperatives are capable of accessing up to K45 million to boost their entities,” Zhuwao said.
The Southern Africa Trade Connectivity Project aims at improving trade infrastructure across the Nacala Corridor in Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia.
