First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has called on various players in the country to explore sustainable and reliable ways of addressing gender financing gaps in the country.
The First Lady said this at Jenda Community Secondary School Ground during commemorations marking International Women’s Day.
Madam Chakwera said proper and adequate financing is the key to addressing gender equality challenges in the country.
She added that although the country has made progress on legal and policy instruments aimed at improving the lives of women, funding remains a critical component in addressing the existing gender gap.
Madam Chakwera said adequate financing is fundamental in promoting gender equality.
UN Resident Representative to Malawi, Rebecca Adah Dontoh, said investing n women empowerment and gender equality initiatives will help to address the challenges and new complexities women and girls are facing in modern days.
She further said Investing in women’s empowerment is a strategic investment in sustainable development and global prosperity.
According to the Ministry of Gender, currently, only 0.2 percent of the country’s budget has been allocated to gender empowerment.
In its analysis, United Nations Women said globally one of the challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is a lack of financing with an annual deficit of $360 million.
