First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera says she is impressed that 25 students from the first cohort supported by Shaping Our Future Foundation (SOFF) have been accepted into various universities across the country.
Madam Chakwera made the remarks at the third edition of the girls’ empowerment retreat held at the University of Malawi in Zomba.
She said it was pleasing to note that from its humble beginnings in 2021, the foundation have made significant strides in maintaining girls in school through support from various organisations.
“Thanks to the unrelenting support from our partners,” Madam Chakwera said.
The First Lady then challenged the girls attending the retreat to remain committed to their education despite the numerous pressures they encounter, drawing from her own experience of overcoming a disadvantaged background to pursue education.
The 2024 girls’ empowerment retreat, themed “Funo Langa,” prioritises cyber security, climate change, and financial literacy among its key focus areas.
The week-long event has been made possible under the auspices of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, Reserve Bank of Malawi, World Vision, and the Joyce Banda Foundation.
