Elderly women hail Social Cash Transfer programme

Elderly women in Rumphi have said the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) has enabled them to live a dignified life by providing them with their daily needs.

One of the beneficiaries, 84-year-old Monica Mhone from Fwira Village in Traditional Authority Kachulu has been able to connect her house to electricity, cement her floors, and replace her roof with iron sheets.

She said she is now able to buy fertilisers for her farm where she grows maize for her household use.

Another beneficiary, 74-year-old Isabel Mkandawire from Makonyola Village in Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, said the programme allowed her to join a village savings and loans group. This has given her access to loans for her vegetable business and helped her meet daily needs such as food.

Coordinator for the Programme in Rumphi, Abel Ndlovu says that Rumphi District Council has disbursed at least K3 billion to 3600 beneficiaries in six years which has helped many to establish businesses and build decent houses for their families.
