Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture says Malawi’s creative industry has the potential to significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth if fully harnessed.
Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry, Misheck Munthali, made the remarks in Lilongwe during the launch of the development of the National Digital Roadmap for the Creative Industries.
The project aims to create a comprehensive plan to guide Malawi’s cultural and creative sectors in navigating and thriving in the digital space.
Munthali said the initiative will help players in the industry embrace digital technologies that will offer opportunities for innovation, job creation and sustainable economic development.
He added that government remains committed to ensuring that artists are protected and valued nationwide.
Director of Arts in the Department of Arts, Humphreys Mpondaminga, said consultations will be conducted across all regions to gather views from stakeholders on how best to shape the roadmap for the benefit of the entire sector.
New Wave Group Chief Operations Officer, Nthangwanika Kondowe, said the initiative will support artists to grow and benefit economically.
The project, supported by UNESCO, has received approximately $30,000 for consultations and will run for 12 months.
